- It means the modem failed to negotiate an error correction protocol (V.42(bis)
- or MNP) during the initial connection. (Thus PROTOCOL=NONE). But the modem
- on the other side apparently concluded an error correction protocol was agreed
- on, and you're seeing the protocol headers that normally would have been
- processed by V.42(bis) or MNP.

- Sounds like a minor timing incompatibility between the specific modems on
- either side. If you're using early firmware revisions for your respective
- modems, there's probably an update or fix to the firmware to prevent this
- sort of occurance..
